Sloped-shouldered office drudge Miyata returns home one Friday evening for a quiet night in, pining for the love of his life who has left him without reason or warning. He has barely got through his front door when he receives an unexpected phone call from his old college buddy Yusuke who leads an altogether more exciting existence as a private investigator. Later the two arrange to meet at a restaurant. It is not long before the anxious looking Yusuke abandons his friend at a table to which he has just invited a teary faced, pretty young girl by the name of Maki. She too has problems. Having just stormed out on her boyfriend, Maki ends up with no money and no place to stay. After an awkward silence, the ice slowly starts to melt between Miyata and Maki, and he invites her to spend the night in his spare room, but it will be a rollercoaster ride threatened by intrusions from Miyata’s conniving ex Ayumi, the desperate reappearance of Yusuke and a riled gangster mob before we see what fate has in store for them.
A Sprightly and humorous shaggy dog story in which the events of one madcap evening are told in a jigsaw-style from the viewpoints different key characters. This theatrical debut from Kenji Uchida will keep you on your toes from beginning to end. Quirky romantic comedy, action movie, detective thriller - A Stranger Of Mine contains elements from all these genres, and much, much more. JS
