All Kindsa Girls is Cheryl Eagan-Donovan's homage to possibly one of the biggest coulda-been-famous garage/punk-rock bands. Often described as Boston's answer to The Ramones, The Real Kids were formed by ex-Modern Lover John Felice and crashed onto the club-scene in the US and Europe in the late 70s and 80s. 1978 saw the release of their self-titled album on Red Star record label, full of punky originals including the classic anthem All Kindsa Girls. Through interviews with singer/songwriter Felice, the creative force behind the The Real Kids, and all band members past and present, Donovan traces the roots of an under-appreciated but critically acclaimed and very much cult worshipped band. Additional Commentary from Jonathon Richman, Wille "Loco" Alexander, Andy Shernoff and John Flansburgh show just how influential and well-respected these guys are.
Here we have a tale of a rock band full of youth, primal energy and talent, set for the big-time alongside the Ramones, but it just didn't quite happen for them. And why not? Bad behaviour and bad decisions. Yep, it was the drugs, the fighting and, you guessed it, the arrogance and plain disregard for any advice their record label or manager would give them. The Real Kids were what the raw and explosive punk rock scene of the 70s and 80s was all about. Truly rock n' roll. You'll be wanting the back catalogue. SD
