DIRECTOR IN RESIDENCE: ZHANG YUAN
In association with Children’s China Charity
SUNDAY 8 OCTOBER AT 2PM
Zhang Yuan is in the vanguard of China’s most important recent developments and is one of the leading members of the ‘sixth generation’ of Chinese filmmakers whose works challenge the strict Chinese system with a critical, uncompromising vision of urban life under pressure. Zhang Yuan has won numerous awards from Venice, Rotterdam, and Viennale. Following a screening of Little Red Flowers Zhang Yuan will speak about the making of his award winning feature. The film will be followed by a Director’s Q&A and drinks reception. All proceeds of the event go to the Children in China Charity.

Set in Beijing in the early 1950's this is the story of Qiang (Dong Bowen) a
disarming, four year old rebel and his attempts to fit into the residential
kindergarten where he's been enrolled by his busy parents. The Principal Kong(Chen Li) and strict head teacher Miss Li (Zhao Rui) immediately recognise him as a trouble maker. Still unable to dress himself Qiang uses his wits and charm to scheme against the system. His courageous antics make him a favorite with the other students but an enemy of Miss Li’s.
With its gorgeous cinematography and spot on casting this is a modern day
fable with a firm political undercurrent.
Little Red Flowers marks Independent film director and producer Zhang Yuan’s first film after a four year hiatus. It featured in this year's Berlin line-up as well as competing in the Dramatic Competition at Sundance.
All proceeds of the screening are going to the Director's preferred charity,
Children in China, to support disadvantaged children and young people in China. SB
“…Zhang has fashioned a kids' film for grown-ups. Think Zero pour Conduite
set during the early years of Communist China, and shot in lustrous color
with a slightly fantastical edge…” Variety
