FOURTEENTH RAINDANCE FILM FESTIVAL

WHO GETS TO CALL IT ART

SUNDAY 1 OCTOBER AT 1:15PM

playing with DAWN OF THE FLIES

Country USA Running Time 80 mins Format 35mm Director/Producer Peter Rosen
DoP Yan Vizinberg, Joel Shapiro, William H Miller, Jonathan Rho Featuring Henry Geldzahler, David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg Print Source Seventh Art Releasing E matt@7thart.com W www.7thart.com

Who gets to call it art? Henry Geldzahler seems to have done, in 1960s New York. Geldzahler moved effortlessly from Abstract Expressionism to proto-Pop, Pop and beyond, and he clearly dwelled in the artist’s studio as much as he stayed at the gallery and the museum. This doc explores the curator’s life and work through archive footage and imagery, and a thread of interviews with some pivotal figures of the epoch: David Hockney, Frank Stella and Larry Poons, to name but a few. Noteworthy is the mosaic of recordings, testimony to the intimate professional and intellectual relationship Geldzahler and Warhol maintained from the inception of NY Pop.

This portrayal of the downtown NY art scene carries the tone of a monumental wave that would change art everywhere unequivocally, circumventing West Coast Pop, European conceptualism and other contemporaneous developments. The blend of archive footage with interviews and the chance to peep at Geldzahler’s art-opulent apartment, snobbish dress code, and love of beautiful objects are more than enough to warrant a view. The cherry on the cake is the chance to revisit New York Painting and Sculpture: 1940–1970, which Geldzahler curated for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and to which he brought some 400 works he cherished by artists he admired.   MF
