Director Ilko Davidov’s Unauthorised And Proud Of It chronicles the career of Todd Loren, the controversial creator and publisher of ‘Revolutionary Comics’, famed for their unauthorised comic book biographies of rock stars: ‘Rock‘N’Roll Comics’. Using a wonderful melange of animation, home video, interviews, archive footage and classic rock, this documentary takes us on a rollercoaster ride of Todd Loren’s successes, failures and eventual demise. As his friends, colleagues and even rock stars Mojo Nixon and Alice Cooper never fail to highlight, Todd Loren made an impression wherever he went.
Considering himself a First Amendment crusader, he fully exercised his freedom of speech right with little concern for the number (or the power) of enemies he made. No surprises then, this documentary has its fair share of silly legal challenge and comic lawsuits. The ‘Rock‘N’Roll Comics’ team, it seems, are laughing the whole way through though, as for them any publicity is good publicity.
With Todd’s untimely murder at the peak of his career, ‘Rock‘N’Roll Comics’ never reached the lofty heights of, say, ‘Marvel Comics’. But, it would seem, Todd Loren was in it as much for the fun as anything else, and he clearly had bagfuls of it producing his much loved (and much hated) comics.
Unauthorised And Proud Of It, complete with murder mystery and Jimi Hendrix gossip, proves a thoroughly watchable celebration of youthful exuberance and rebellion. UG
