Jan Harlan’s affectionate portrait of the late, great Stanley Kubrick is an exciting and revealing tribute to one of cinema’s most profound influences. Beginning with his childhood, Harlan (Kubrick’s producer and brother-in-law) explores Kubrick’s life and career from his introduction to photography and journalism, to his last work, Eyes Wide Shut. The film sets out to demystify Kubrick’s purported misogyny, obsessive compulsive behaviour, and extreme eccentricity through interviews and stories given by friends, family, and colleagues, such as Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Jack Nicholson, and Kubrick’s widow, Christianne, who all remember the loving husband and father as a normal guy who loved chess, dogs, and books.
A lot of very interesting facts about Kubrick’s works are revealed sequentially film by film through those who worked with him on each project. For instance, Kubrick affixed NASA f/0.7 satellite photo lenses to a 35mm camera to shoot all of Barry Lyndon’s interiors by candlelight only. Kubrick’s unfinished projects, such as his Napoleon biopic and A.I. (later finished by Spielberg) are also explored. In this trip through Kubrick’s career, a lot of remarkable things are also revealed about a man who shied away from interviews and kept his personal life far from the public eye. The many exclusive interviews provide genuine insight into the very private genius responsible for so many iconic films. JV
Stanley Kubrick: A Life In Pictures will be presented by Jan Harlan followed by an interview and Q&A.
