Australian filmmaker George Gittoes captured the music listened to by American GI's in Iraq in his last documentary, Soundtrack to War. Elliot Lovett, one of the soldiers he met in a rap battle explained, "We get shot at more in Miami than Baghdad". In his new film, Rampage, Gittoes accepts Lovett's invitation to visit his family in the neighborhood of Brownside (Brown Sub) on the subhurbs of Miami. On a small estate echoing with gunshots, we meet Elliot's younger brothers; 20-yr-old street-smart Marcus and 14-year-old talented rapper Denzell. Life is far from easy in Brown Sub, where the economically depressed community is rife with drug abuse and violence AK-47s being the weapons of choice. Marcus points out "It's very rare that people come to see us, unless it's something tragic". Gittoes energetic camera follows the brothers and the rest of their gang, as they hang out on the streets and rap and rhyme to pass the time. It seems the only way out is through music and the army.
During the filming of Rampage, tragedy strikes, as a member of the family is shot by a 16-year-old hit man from a rival gang. The last part of the film follows Denzell, whose emotional rollercoaster after the death fuels his creativity and his passion to tell his story through lyrics.
This gripping documentary charts the lives of a group of young brothers making the most of what they have and struggling against all the odds for a better life. SD
