‘This is a poo story’ begins presenter Mark Little, ‘It was the humble toilet that was to lead the band Empty Boat and myself on an extraordinary journey’.
In 2004 inspired by the work of Water Aid, a group of musicians and filmmakers left their leafy green sanitised homeland to see first hand the problems associated with inadequate sanitation and hygiene practices. And how the lack of things we take for granted and don’t even think twice about, such as having a toilet and washing our hands, were killing a country and keeping life expectancy rates unbelievably low. We are told only one out of five of the rural population have access to sanitation ie: a toilet.
Empty Boat go on a musical tour of Mozambique with Massukos (the country’s number one band) and take part in their ‘wash your hands for good health’ campaign. On one hand this films depicts a journey of joy, vibrancy, hope, camaraderie and good music. On the other, it’s a discovery of the day to day struggle of communities just to have enough clean water to survive and the impact that has, even on the ability to educate their children, it also explores the relatively simple steps they can take to make an immeasurable difference.
