The sight of immaculately groomed and unfeasibly pretty young men sporting peroxide plumes of hair, the latest designer garb and randomly accosting girls in the streets is a familiar one in Japanese cities. What is not so obvious is that, rather than just chasing women, these men are actively selling their own favours.
Shedding light onto the extraordinary world of the “host boy”, The Great Happiness Space reveals that such scenes are merely the tip of the iceberg in a culture where sex and companionship can be bought as easily and as guiltlessly as any other commodity. Jake Clennell’s candid and sensational documentary introduces us to Issei, the genial number one host at Osaka’s Cafe Rakkyo. Along with his colleagues, it is his job to make beautiful young women laugh, feel good about themselves, and unwind after a busy day at work. But such services do no not come cheap - neither for the clients prepared to fork out $500 a time for a bottle of champagne, nor the hosts whose job it is to do virtually anything to keep them coming back.
The Great Happiness Space puts a new spin on the ancient Geisha tradition. Quite how the director managed to infiltrate this hedonistic hidden world is anyone’s guess, but the footage Clennell has captured is nothing short of jaw-dropping. JS book tickets for this screening
