‘It’s a nice thing to do, maybe make a record in America’ muses David Kilgour. As a founding member of the seminal Clean and a legendary presence on New Zealand’s independent music scene for over 25 years, Kilgour is quietly expressing an ambition that to most musicians might seem obvious, perhaps run-of-the-mill. But for Kilgour, nothing is predictable.
Far Off Town charts his time in Nashville recording with members of Lambchop and casts its net wide, becoming a meditation on the nature of the music scene in the home of country. Far Off Town is in part a straight documentary catching Kilgour and Lambchop at work and play, relaxed and extemporizing. While it’s a pleasure observing Lambchop in the raw – mainman Kurt Wagner is more shadow than solid – Far Off Town reveals a Nashville outside the music row mainstream of the major labels, an independent-thinking parallel world. Of course Nashville has always had a strong tradition of independent music production, but it’s rarely unearthed.
When not recording with Lambchop, Kilgour collaborates with Yo La Tengo in North Carolina at the 15th anniversary show of his label. Later, in New Zealand, he’s seen with The Clean. Strewn along his journey’s path are Al Kooper, Billy Joe Shaver, Will Oldham, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot and The Silver Jew’s David Berman. Operating on many levels, Far Off Town offers a journey worth taking. KT
