Focusing on Arkansas’ infamous Cummins work farm, documentary maker Kelly Duda establishes through interviews with current and former inmates and other witnesses that convicts commonly known for drug addiction and unprotected homosexual activity were allowed to give blood to be sold commercially. The blood was then processed and sold in Canada and used, among other things, to produce Factor 8, a clotting by-product usually sold to hemophiliacs. Amongst those who made use of Factor 8 are inheritors of HIV and hepatitis C infections. Recent reports from the UK maintain that Clinton may be asked to testify in a case brought by victims of contaminated blood in Scotland.
What the documentary entails is that Clinton might have been impeached for the wrong crime and that trying to pin something on the then President Clinton might have led to a glaring overlook of what the author of this doc found in his exploration of links between the Arkansas prison system and cases of HIV and hepatitis infections.
One of the achievements of the film lies in how both filmmaker and spectator seem to observe the unfolding of events together, as if sitting on joined chairs. Factor 8 is shrewd and to the point, it apologises to no one for exposing the top to bottom links in the contaminated blood scandal. ER
